The great benefit of Aeroplan Points is that you can use those points to book flights with partners that are not part of the Star Alliance. Those include Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Gulf Air, Oman Air and Virgin Australia. We found four examples that could offer excellent value for money.

In the first example, we found award availability with Singapore Airlines from Frankfurt to New York (JFK) one-way in business class for 60,000 Aeroplan Points and 300 CAD. The total price would be 953 Euro or 1117 USD, if you calculate the buying costs for Aeroplan Points and the surcharges.

JFK Example 1

A regular retail price with Singapore Airlines would be 2771 Euro, so the savings could be significant if you need a one-way flight only.

The second example is between Singapore and Tokyo. The flight time is around seven hours.  A redemption on this route could be a good value. Flights between those cities are usually expensive. Aeroplan charges 45,000 points and 150 CAD, which equals to a total price of 668,65 € or 783,58 USD.

Singapore Tokyo Example

The third example, which provides good value for points, is between Hong Kong and Auckland. Flights in business class are available for 60,000 points and 174 CAD. So the total costs for this one-way flight would be 875,39€ or 1025,91€, which is excellent for the flight duration.

Hong Kong Auckland Example

Finally, you can also find availability with Aeroplan Points for one-way flights between Europe and Australia. This is a bit more expensive and would cost 110,000 points and 285 CAD. The total price would be 1614,22 Euro or 1891,60 USD. However, if you find availability and need a one-way flight, this could be a good option to consider.

Frankfurt Sydney Example

We recommend buying points if you have a clear idea and plan where you prefer to use them. Due to the risk of devaluation, we do not recommend keeping points for too long within your account. It is always better to use and redeem them as soon as possible.
